October 17, 2001, Wednesday. Problems with KGB.

We slept late this morning. After breakfast we visited the place where we had prepaid for one night; we asked for a second night. Next, we went to find the post office but instead found a store where we bought some food.

We had a picnic on the grass. After lunch we did find the post office. I mailed two letters and Xavier bought envelopes. Then we decided to return to the bus stop and take a sightseeing voyage by bus. While waiting for the bus we noticed a shop nearby which sold postcards. Feeling tired of waiting we decided to go to this shop; and, of course, we missed that bus.

We had to wait a long time for a second bus. It did come and we boarded the bus. It drove for a long time and I became concerned as to where we were. Exiting the bus at the very next stop I learned that indeed we had gone in the wrong direction as to where we wanted to go. We started walking and came to a bridge. I walked across this railroad bridge and Xavier was behind me taking photos. Later I found, that Xavier made this photos:

When I reached the end of the bridge I met a man who was cleaning the street. I asked him for directions and he explained we had to turn back and retrace our steps. Xavier did not say anything to me. This time at the end of the bridge two men in khaki colored uniforms met us. They gave no explanations, but told us we had to report to their supervisor at the security station. Having no choice we agreed to go. Entering a small wooden house under the bridge we waited for the boss.

It was then that Xavier told me that while he took photos on a bridge, a man pointed to his gun and waved his hands. Now Xavier understands what the man was trying to tell him; that is, NO PHOTOS ALLOWED! The boss arrived and asked for our documents. He looked at Xavier’s passport and said he needed to call the KGB. After several phone calls by this man we were moved to another building. They escorted us to a building where control and security of the rail station was located. We sat there and waited for three hours before two men arrived. For two hours we were asked and answered many questions. Finally the boss’s supervisor arrives and returns our passports to us. He was very polite and asked if we would give him all our films. I refused, and he said, “okay”.

When leaving the building we walked by this bridge and I suggested we take a final photo! As Xavier prepared to take a photo, the supervisor was leaving via this bridge to return to his home after work and asked us not to take any photos of the bridge. We agreed!

Finally we did arrive back at the garage. There were many people there. Everybody was waiting for Kostia (mechanic).

It was 6pm hours and a boy told us that Kostia was not there all day. After buying some food at a shop we returned again to the garage. Kostia appeared.

He said he found the ring but he did not buy it. Why? We remained at the garage a short time and then returned to the hotel where we watched a film and fell asleep.
